The Midwives Alliance of Pennsylvania (MAP) has a history of bringing together midwives from across the Commonwealth in support of professional collaboration, advocacy, education, and community-based maternity care. Today, MAP continues that tradition by serving as a statewide resource and voice for Pennsylvania's midwifery community. 2
Pennsylvania's Midwifery Community
Midwives have served growing families in the Pennsylvania region since before the founding of our nation. Long before the emergence of modern obstetrics, midwives were the primary providers of maternity care, attending births, supporting mothers, and safeguarding the health of families in communities throughout what would become the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania's midwifery heritage reflects the rich cultural diversity of its people. Generations of immigrant midwives brought with them knowledge, skills, and traditions from around the world, contributing to one of the most diverse and enduring maternity care traditions in the United States. Through every era of Pennsylvania's history, midwives have remained a trusted and essential source of care for growing families.
Today, community midwives continue this unbroken legacy by providing safe, individualized, relationship-centered care throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, and the newborn period.
MAP represents and supports a diverse community of midwives committed to professional excellence, collaboration, and the advancement of community-based maternity care. We honor the profession's deep roots while working to ensure that Pennsylvania families continue to have access to the personalized, evidence-informed care that Pennsylvania community midwives have provided for centuries.

The Midwives Alliance of Pennsylvania advances, supports, and promotes community-based midwifery throughout the Commonwealth by fostering professional excellence, advocating for informed maternity care choices, strengthening collaboration among midwives, and serving as a trusted voice in legislative, regulatory, and public policy discussions affecting women, mothers, babies, and families.

We envision a Pennsylvania where every woman can freely choose the maternity care that best meets her needs, where community-based midwifery is fully recognized as a vital component of the healthcare system, and where mothers, babies, and families thrive through access to safe, personalized, and relationship-centered care.
