Midwives Alliance of Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's professional voice for community midwifery since 1999

Founded in 1999, the Midwives Alliance of Pennsylvania supports midwives, advances community-based maternity care, and serves as a trusted voice in legislative, regulatory,
and professional discussions affecting growing families throughout the Commonwealth.

Serving Pennsylvania since 1999

Founded in 1999, the Midwives Alliance of Pennsylvania (MAP) was established to ensure that midwives have a collective voice in the conversations shaping maternity care throughout the Commonwealth. MAP serves as a professional association, educational resource, and advocate for community-based midwifery, working to advance the profession and protect access to safe, individualized maternity care for Pennsylvania families.

Since its founding in 1999, MAP has provided a framework for Pennsylvania midwives to engage with policymakers, healthcare stakeholders, and the public on issues affecting maternity care. Through advocacy, education, and professional collaboration, the organization works to promote informed maternity care choices and support high standards within the midwifery community. Today, MAP continues its mission of leadership, collaboration, and advocacy on behalf of Pennsylvania midwives and the women, mothers, and families they serve.

Our Purpose

The Midwives Alliance of Pennsylvania advances, supports, and promotes community-based midwifery throughout the Commonwealth by fostering professional excellence, advocating for informed maternity care choices, strengthening collaboration among midwives, and serving as a trusted voice in legislative, regulatory, and public policy discussions affecting community midwives, mothers, babies, and families.

Current Priorities

Supporting Midwives. Strengthening Communities. Protecting Choice.

MAP actively participates in legislative, regulatory, and professional discussions that affect community midwives and the families they serve. As Pennsylvania's established voice for community midwifery, we work to ensure that maternity care policies are informed by the experience of practicing midwives and the needs of the they support.

Our ongoing priorities include:

  • Supporting safe and accessible community-based maternity care

  • Advancing professional standards within the midwifery profession

  • Strengthening collaboration among Pennsylvania midwives

  • Promoting informed maternity care choices for women and families

  • Engaging policymakers and stakeholders in meaningful dialogue about maternal and infant health

Why MAP Matters

Midwives play a vital role in Pennsylvania's maternity care landscape, providing individualized, relationship-based care to women and families throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.

MAP exists to ensure that midwives have a strong, unified voice and that families continue to have access to safe, informed, and evidence-based maternity care options. Through advocacy, professional support, and public education, MAP helps strengthen both the profession of midwifery and the communities it serves.

Stronger Together

Together, we can support the future of midwifery in Pennsylvania.
